Cycles and cycling often feature in television advertisements - representing
at various times wholesomeness, wistful nostalgia, sporting prowess and
the absurd. Collected here are all those that I can remember - and can
find copes of on the internet. If you know of others that have not occurred
to me, do email to let me know.
Possibly my favorite, featuring Peter Armitage, who plays Bill Webster
on Coronation Street. Mid 1980s.

An advert that would cause me to give Fiat Palios a good slap on the
roof, if I came up beside them at lights.

by Ridley Scott, no less and first screened in 1973
Just why do advertisers like Victorian Pendleton so much? Here she is
in a lovely homage to the nation's favorite
This 1980s public information film is low tech and ostensibly not very
inspiring. The song plays in my head sometimes when I ride a night, so
it was possibly more effective than it first seems
Public information 1950s style
This ad featuring Welsh popster Duffy, provoked 18 complaints to the
Advertising Standards Authority. Happily, they were rejected.

Lots of the Cravendale ads feature a cyclist - although he only rides
his bikes in a few of them
for dispassionate, expert advice on general cycling
issues
How this site is organised
As reviews are added, they are featured on the
front page. All titles are listed in the master index and cross-referenced
in the other indicies.
The subject line contains the title, author and
date of each book's publication. As a general rule, we list the
date of the actual edition that we read, unless there is an obvious
reason to use the original date (say where we read a reprint).
The first line of the main text contains the name
of the publisher, the ISBN
number, where it exists, an indication of the book's
size and the number of printed pages that it contains. Finally,
where it is clear, I list the published price of the work in the
currency that is most prominently displayed.
We summarise the book in a single sentence or two
in the next line. The rest of the review is then intended as a self-contained
piece.
